Hello friends and family,
As we start the month of May, we are celebrating good health! Lukas› bout with Pneumonia (Lungenentzündung) knocked him flat for two weeks, and then it took four more weeks for him to recover! But he’s finally starting to feel like himself again, and we are very thankful!
Because of his illness, we had to reschedule a trip to install water filters, but when the rescheduled day arrived, he was still too sick to go. So Pastor Neuong from the Kampot Pastor’s Association volunteered to lead the trip without us. He was joined by an intern from our church to help him with the filter, and two ladies to direct the children’s hygiene program. They installed filters in two locations, and taught approximately 100 children in all. Although we were disappointed that we couldn’t join the trip, it was also encouraging to see that they could do it without us. It’s cool to see how far the project has come in the last 15 months since we moved here, and that we now have a team that is able to install filters on their own. They did, however, bring back water samples for Lukas to test. I guess it will take a little longer before we have another trained laboratory technician on the team.
In celebration of Khmer New Year, our little city hosted a three day long water fight! According to a very reliable Facebook report 😉 we had 1 million visitors descend on Kampot to join in the fun. It was nearly impossible to drive across town, and if you did manage it, you were sure to get wet. I pulled a few photos off of the internet to try to give you a glimpse of the fun (chaos) 😉 .
Guests! In the last month we’ve had three international guests stay with us. First, we were excited to meet Jenny from the USA, and then later in the month, Prisca and Kay from Switzerland. We love meeting new people and sharing life together, it blesses them and encourages us.
South and South East Asia are trying to deal with a heatwave right now. It’s so extreme that some countries are even closing schools. While the recorded temperature might not look too extreme, the humidity here is brutal. Currently at our house it’s 36C (96.8F), but the heat index (what it actually feels like) is being reported at 44C (111F). And that’s pretty cool compared to most of the region. Our little city sits between a mountain the the ocean, so we have a breeze, but up north in Siem Reap it’s 41C (105.6F) today, with a heat index of 46C (114.8F)! At the moment, it feels like everyone is in survival mode, including us! As you can imagine, installing water filters is on hold for a few weeks as everyone tries to stay cool and not get sick.
One good thing that came out of this hot weather is that Benjamin has learned to swim! (see photo link)
Well, that was our month. Here’s the photo link, and we’ll be back with more next month 🙂
